EDI Grants for Faculty Leadership in Diversity & Equity

The Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion offers small grants to faculty who seek to enhance their leadership capacity in support of diversity and equity on campus.

Grants ranging between $500 and $3,000 cover the cost of participating in a workshop, conference, or other opportunity that will help faculty transform knowledge around diversity into strategic action. Allowable costs include professional coaching, conference or workshop fees, and any associated travel, accommodation, and meals.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting on April 1, 2016 and will be awarded based on eligibility and potential for impact, subject to the availability of funds.

Eligibility

All Academic Senate Faculty and Non-Senate Instructional Faculty from General Campus, Health Sciences, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography with the desire to contribute to diversity and equity at UC San Diego are eligible to apply for funding. 

What type of activities will be considered under this grant mechanism?

Leadership opportunities that would help you to do one or more of the following:

  • Effectively support UC San Diego’s diversity goals;
  • Increase your understanding of diversity issues and strategies in higher education;
  • Understand how to effectively and innovatively reduce structural and educational barriers;
  • Increase your ability to create inclusive classrooms; and/or
  • Champion faculty diversity and equity in a thoughtful systems approach.

Application Guidelines

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting on April 1, 2016 and will be awarded based on eligibility and potential for impact, subject to the availability of funds.

Applications must be 1-2 pages (not including attachments), and include the following components:

  1. Description of Opportunity – Describe the opportunity in which you seek to participate. Please include website links, flyers, or other supporting documents.  Only future activities will be considered for funding; applicants may not request funds retroactively.
  2. Rationale –Describe what you hope to gain from your participation, and how it will increase your knowledge, skills, or ability to contribute to diversity.

    Note: professional conferences associated with an appointee’s discipline or any activity  solely benefiting his/her research will not be considered for award.
  3. Budget – Include how much you are seeking (not to exceed $3,000) and an explanation of how the funds will be used.  Please include specific cost estimates.

    Note: Funds may only be requested to cover the direct individual cost of participating in a leadership opportunity, as described above.  Allowable costs include professional coaching, conference or workshop fees, and any associated travel, accommodation, and meals.

All applicants will be notified of their award status within one month from the time of application.  If you are relying on EDI funding to register for an activity or arrange travel, please plan according.

Expectations of Award

Upon completion, faculty members awarded a grant must submit a brief description (not to exceed two pages) on their participation, what they gained (e.g. new information, skills, ideas, strategies, etc.), and how they plan to apply it to UC San Diego.

Applicants are encouraged to be proactive in identifying opportunities that will help them develop as diversity leaders and to think broadly.  The examples below are merely illustrative.
